The Pontefract farmhouse was filled with the comforting smell of Irish stew when Percy arrived home that evening. Throughout the journey on the train, she had stared at the note and its deadly implications. Did peers murder people? She thought she remembered Lord Banbury in the gallery when Cecily had burst in screaming. But could she be sure he was present before that?
After removing her hat and coat she found Mrs. Appleby in the kitchen putting the final touches on a fruit cake.
âHello, Mrs. Pontefract. How was London?â The cook had a smudge of flour on her forehead.
âInteresting.â Percy lowered herself slowly into a chair.
âOh? Here, let me serve you some stew and mashed potatoes and you can tell me all about it.â
Mrs. Appleby pulled the casserole dish from the oven and placed it in the middle of the oak table. The thick gravy was happily bubbling at the edges, and Percy was gratified to see soft, white dumplings floating in the brothy sauce.
The cook ladled a healthy amount of stew into a bowl and cut a thick doorstop of local bread to go with it. Percy tore the slice apart and dipped the spongy goodness into the rich gravy. After serving her own portion, Mrs. Appleby said, âNow, what was so interesting?â
Percy told her about her awkward conversation with Lord Banbury and the discovery of the note in the same handwriting as the one that may have lured Nigel into the alley and to his death.
âJust because Nigel got a note does not mean the person who sent it is the one who killed him,â Mrs. Appleby pointed out. âIt could have been a perfectly innocent meeting or an old note.â
An invisible weight lifted from Percy. âWhy didnât I think of that? I had Lord Banbury arrested, charged and convicted already.â
âIt could be suspicious, to be sure, but not conclusive, by any means. His Lordship was there to buy a painting, correct? He may have wanted to talk to Nigel in private about a fair price.â
Percy grabbed the notebook which was still on the table and recorded the presence of the note next to Lord Banburyâs name. She held her pencil above the page. âThere is one more thing.â
Mrs. Appleby cocked a brow.
âHe lives in Hampshire.â
The cookâs forehead knitted.
âNigel lived in Hampshire,â Percy explained, waving her hands for dramatic emphasis.
A large smile crept across the older womanâs face. âIf living in Hampshire is incriminating then you have a pretty big list of suspects.â
Percy sighed. âYou know what I mean. If you put that together with the fact that he was at the exhibition and his handwriting seems to match the note found on Nigel, that makes three incriminating facts.â
The phone began to ring in the hall.
âShall I get it?â asked Mrs. Appleby.
Percy thought of her motherâs reprimand and her promise to call if she saw Lord Banburyâs name attached to another event.
âIâll get it. It could be Piers.â
The cookâs face fell. âI forgot. He already called. He had to go up North.
